34 Weeks

Today I am 34 weeks along in my pregnancy with our second boy. The last couple of days have been kind of crazy. Please do not be alarmed. I'm just writing this down for our family journal.

On Thursday I went in for a regular appointment. I had been feeling contractions getting a little stronger all week but nothing I felt to be alarmed about. I was hoping that when I went in though she would check me to see if I had dilated any. When I was almost 35 weeks with Jackson she checked me and I had dilated to 2 1/2 cm and was told to go on bed-rest for two weeks. Well anyway when I got to my checkup Dixie wasn't there because she had a delivery at the Hospital. The nurse did my check up. I had told her about the contractions, and said that I would start keeping track of them, but that I didn't think that they were very regular. She said she would call Dixie and they would try to get me in either at the end of the day or next week to check things.

When I got home I started to monitor the contractions. I then realized that they were more like 8 to 10 min apart and had been getting a little stronger. At 6:30pm Dixie office called after hours and wanted me to come in so Dixie could check me. I gave them the log of the contractions and then Dixie came in to check me. I am dilated to 2 cm. We weren't alarmed by this though because of my pregnancy with Jackson so she gave me a prescription that helps to slow down the contractions and told me to take it when I got home. If after 2 hours they had not lessened then I was to call her and she would decided if I should go in to the hospital to have then give me a stronger drug to stop the contractions.

10:00 pm the contractions actually got stronger and longer than before. Brent called our friends the Waters. They came over to help Brent give me a blessing and then stayed with our kids for a little while so that Brent could come to the Hospital with me (Kaden's parents were over at their house with their kids). Dixie had called ahead to let them know that I was coming. When I got there the hooked me up to and IV and then also gave me the antibiotic for the strep B to pre-treat in the case of pre-mature labor. I was also given a shot to help stop the contractions and a Steroid shot for the baby to help with lung development if we were to have the baby before 37 weeks. By the way all of this is just precaution! The steroid shot hurt so bad. The shot was the fast part but the medications burns for the longest time. I wanted to cry. Brent was so nice to me he stood by me and told me its okay to cry if you need to. Finally the pain when away. I don't think that it was there for more than 1 or 2 min maybe even shorted, but it felt like and eternity. Brent went home to the kids at around 11:30 so that Amanda could go home and I spent that night at the hospital to be monitored. The contractions stopped almost altogether after they gave me the shot to stop them. They continued with the antibiotic though the night and also the prescription that Dixie had given me earlier in the evening.

At 8:00am they brought me breakfast. It was so good. There was and egg ham and cheese omelet, toast, bacon, and green grapes, and also some cereal. I was so hungry that I ate all of it. The then wheeled me out at about 9:00am. I was told to keep taking my prescription for another 24 hour and then as needed, and to also come back that night to have another steroid shot (NO not another one I thought I was done with that).

Brent has been so good to help me though. I was suppose to go up north yesterday to get the rest of our fence for the backyard, but now that was out of the question. Brent took the day off and when up with Erica and Jackson. It was nice to have the house all to myself. They got home at around 2:30pm and we hurried to get Erica ready for a birthday party she had been invited to. It was a pretend beach party. All of the kids wore their swim suits. Erica had so much fun. She keeps telling me how she went to the beach.

Well the contractions have pretty much stopped. I still feel one every now and then when I exert myself to much. I guess thats a good thing because then it makes me realize I'm doing to much and need to go and sit down. I made it though the second steroid shot and lived. I'm to stay down as much as I can until my appointment next Thursday, and then they will decide what needs to be done from there. It's so nice this all happened around the weekend because Brent can be home with me and the kids. He has been so good to me and makes sure that I'm getting as much rest as possible.

  3. Hey Carol! I had the steroid shots with Nyah and I will never forget the thickness of that shot. Not fun! Also, I am now 27 weeks and I started contracting pretty good around 24 weeks, but with my pregnancy with Graham I started contracting around 28 weeks and found out that I have an "irritable uterus" so I contract alot, but it doesn't necessarily mean I am going into labor. Anyway, I have to be monitored and have to take it easy for as doing much makes the contraction more frequent. So I know what you are going through and it is hard. Hang in there for a couple more weeks! I can't wait to see your little boy! And as hard as it is with 2 other small children, take it easy and really don't do much! Good luck! -Shayna

  4. Oh no Carol! I wish we were closer so we could take Erica and Jackson off your hands for a day and let you rest. Tell Brent to put on his Mr. Mom apron while he's home so that you can keep that little guy cooking for at least 3 more weeks! Sorry about those steroid shots....they are definately not pleasant!
