Day 5- Skagway

This is a train used for cutting through large mounds of snow.  After walking through the town we decided to walk to the cemetery to see Jeffery R. (Soapy) Smith's grave.  It took forever to get there.  My legs were killing me.  I was really glad that we had done it once we got there.
Jeffery R. Smith was a con-man who came to Skagway during the gold rush.  He took over the whole town in a matter of 8 months.  The town people met at the docks one evening for a secret meeting to decided how to get rid of "Soapy Smith".  Soapy heard about the meeting and went down to stop it.  He was met my some men guarding the docks.  Soapy took out he gun and fired on Frank Ried who had also pulled his gun.  Both Frank and Soapy died of their injuries.  The town people all said that Frank killed and liberated Skagway from Soapy Smith.  Some 50 years later it came out that Frank did not kill Soapy Smith.  Another guard shot Soapy after he shot Frank Ried.  The people said that Frank did it to save the life of the other guard because he had murdered Soapy Smith.  Soapy Smith does not have his original tombstone.  It had been stolen a couple of times. It was also a favorite urinating spot for people picnicking nearby.
This is the monument to Frank Reid.  On the monument is a quote.  I can't remember what it says other than the town people thanking him for saving Skagway from Soapy Smith.
This is Reid falls right behind the cemetery.  This was one of our favorite spots on the trip.

There are some interesting plants we saw and liked.
There were beautiful snow topped mountains everywhere.
This is the train that would take you up the mountain.  It coast over $150 per person to go on the ride.  Brent and I did not do any excursions on the trips because they all cost so much money.
